Course overview

Be a part of the next generation of electrical and electronic technology. Electrical engineering is concerned with large scale electrical systems including renewable power generation and electric motors. Electronic engineering focuses on lower voltage systems such as computer systems, communication networks and integrated circuits. Together they are critical for next generation applications such as autonomous vehicles, space technology, smart cities and a low-carbon economy. The Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) (Honours) is accredited by Engineers Australia at the level of professional engineer and is recognised internationally under the Washington Accord.

This degree has been designed to provide a strong foundation in both the theoretical and the practical aspects of engineering, particularly those relevant to the systematic development of electrical and electronic engineering and an awareness of social, economic, cultural and environmental aspects of electrical and electronic engineering. This degree allows you to specialise in four areas - Computer & Network Systems, Electrical Power & Renewable Energy Systems, Electronic Systems and Wireless Systems Security.

Nuclear Engineering major

A Nuclear Engineering major is also offered in this degree. Nuclear engineering at Flinders University is offered through a tri-nation academic partnership between Flinders University (Australia), the University of Rhode Island (United States) and Manchester University (United Kingdom. An exchange option is available in the United States through a placement opportunity. Nuclear engineering topics are undertaken in intensive mode over 8 days in summer (January) and winter (July) from Year 2. Students also have the potential to complete the degree in 3.5 years (fast-tracked). To be eligible to study this major applicants must be an Australian citizen.

City Campus

Flinders City Campus offers a broad range of study areas and is designed for collaborative learning, interactive teaching and industry engagement. Positioned adjacent to the Adelaide Railway Station on North Terrace and central to trams and buses, the City Campus provides students with greater connection, convenience and accessibility.

Practical experience

This degree provides students with the opportunity to gain first-hand industry experience with a 20-week industry placement as part of their degree. One of the longest work placements offered in Australia, it enables students to work alongside professional engineers tackling real-world problems.

Your career

On completion of this degree students will be able to proficiently use professional skills and knowledge in the systematic development of complex electrical and electronic systems and demonstrate a broad understanding of the electrical and electronic engineering discipline. Students will apply their skills and knowledge in a professionally responsible manner and be able to communicate effectively with other engineers and the wider global community using a wide range of communication technologies. Students will develop engineering solutions appropriate to the social, political, international, economic and environmental contexts in which they are applied and engage in the process of continuing learning needed to retain the necessary level of professional skills and knowledge in the area of electrical and electronic engineering.

This degree prepares graduates for careers in teams with health professionals and medical specialists. Potential occupations may include environmental health, air pollution management and water supply engineer; nuclear engineer; potential employers may include building and construction companies, government agencies and universities.
