Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) (Honours) / Master of Engineering (Mechanical)

Many companies want engineers that combine the skills of electrical and electronic engineers with those of mechanical engineers. This double degree takes the advantages from both degrees and provides your with the knowledge to understand the interplay between developing solutions in mechanical engineering and the need to understand electrical and electronic engineering. The Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) (Honours)/Master of Engineering (Mechanical) is accredited by Engineers Australia at the level of professional engineer. Professional engineering courses accredited by Engineers Australia are recognised internationally under the Washington Accord. Graduates meet the academic requirements for attaining chartered professional engineering status.

This degree has been designed to provide a strong foundation in both the theoretical and the practical aspects of engineering, particularly those relevant to the systematic development of electro-mechanical systems. An awareness of social, economic, cultural and environmental aspects of electrical and electronic engineering, and mechanical engineering are also central to this course. It provides an ability to critically analyse and evaluate information, solve problems and provides understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities and a commitment to them.

Nuclear Engineering Major

A Nuclear Engineering major is also offered in this degree. Nuclear engineering at Flinders University is offered through a tri-nation academic partnership between Flinders University (Australia), the University of Rhode Island (United States) and Manchester University (United Kingdom. An exchange option is available in the United States through a placement opportunity. Nuclear engineering topics are undertaken in intensive mode over 8 days in summer (January) and winter (July) from Year 2. Students also have the potential to complete the course in 3.5 years (fast-tracked). To be eligible to study this major applicants must be an Australian citizen.

Practical experience

This degree provides students with the opportunity to gain first-hand industry experience with a 20-week industry placement as part of their degree. One of the longest work placements offered in Australia, it enables students to work alongside professional engineers tackling real-world problems. Also included in the degree is an opportunity to undertake a substantial research-oriented project.

On completion of this degree students will be able to competently use professional skills and knowledge in the systematic development of complex electrical and electronic, and mechanical engineering systems and demonstrate a broad understanding of the electrical and electronic, and mechanical engineering disciplines.

Students will apply their skills and knowledge in a professionally responsible manner and be able to communicate effectively with other engineers and t he wider global community using a wide range of communication technologies. Students will develop engineering solutions appropriate to the social, political, international, economic and environmental contexts in which they are applied and engage in the process of continuing learning needed to retain the necessary level of professional skills and knowledge in the area of electrical and electronic, and mechanical engineering.

The double degree course provides the foundations that will underpin ongoing professional development, preparing graduates for further study or for a career in an engineering related field or in other areas where the range of skills and knowledge acquired is needed or desirable.
