Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) (Honours) / Master of Engineering Management

Take part in a combination that allows high-achieving students to complete a program which combines civil engineering and engineering management in only five years. The civil component covers the four main civil engineering themes of structures, transport, water and geomechanics. Engineering management combines the problem-solving and technical design ability of engineering with executive organisational skills and the planning power of business and management. This degree is accredited by Engineers Australia at the level of professional engineer and is recognised internationally under the Washington Accord. Graduates meet the academic requirements for attaining chartered professional engineering status.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) (Honours)/Master of Engineering Management has been designed to provide a strong understanding of both the theoretical and the practical aspects of engineering, particularly those relevant to the systematic development of civil engineering systems combining the technological problem-solving ability of engineering and other STEM disciplines with the organisational, administrative, and planning abilities of business and management disciplines.

This double degree prepares students to plan, design, build and maintain buildings, infrastructure and resources while learning in purpose-built civil engineering labs and facilities in the new technology precinct at Tonsley. Designed in close collaboration with industry to meet future development needs in civil engineering, gaining the skills and experience to manage large scale, complex projects, executive organisation skills and business and boardroom skills.

Students complete core (compulsory) topics that include either a major or minor research project, and option topics chosen from a range of option topics available. These topics aim to provide students the ability to critically analyse and evaluate information and solve complex engineering management problems, preparing them for future roles as engineering managers.

Practical experience

This degree provides students with the opportunity to gain first-hand industry experience with a 20-week industry placement as part of their degree. One of the longest work placements offered in Australia, it enables students to work alongside professional engineers tackling real-world problems. This degree also includes the ability to undertake a substantial research-oriented project.

Your career

On completion of the Bachelor degree, and subject to meeting minimum academic requirements, students will progress to the Masters component of the double degree where students will be provided with advanced-level theoretical aspects and the practical skills of professional engineering management that builds on a student's previous knowledge and experience.

The double degree aims to prepare graduates for a career as a professional engineer and have the skills and knowledge to manage complex civil engineering driven enterprises.
