Bachelor of Design and Technology

Design and Technology are broadly defined by many industries and Flinders University is leading the way in combining Engineering and Design Technologies into a co-dependant degree collaboration. Utilising Design Strategy along with User Experience Research (UX), these core competencies will allow you to develop your skills in product design and manufacturing. Understanding the many variations of production methods, factoring the use of sustainable materials are critical to conceptualising modern consumer artefacts, all the while diminishing the impacts of our consumer culture.

Design focuses on iterative prototyping and sketching, allowing you to transform ideas into product designs that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Examining User Experience Mapping and Human Machine Interface (HMI) activities, you begin your journey in the understanding of the role of a design professional within the dynamic ecosystem of Engineering Design. Additionally, this particular Flinders' University degree aligns with a strategy to work closely with the university's engineering, computer science, robotics and biomedical disciplines to provide a practical grounding within Design Management and Human Factors Engineering. This degree is recognised by the Design institute of Australia.

This course has been designed to provide an understanding of the theory and practice of design, product development, business and innovation skills. It provides graduates with a sound understanding of a science, engineering or technology discipline and the ability to apply existing knowledge to contribute to innovation and entrepreneurship within an organisation. On completion of this degree students will be able to understand and competently use scientific, engineering or technological skills and knowledge in an environment in which innovation is essential.

This degree provides you with practical experience that prepares you for the workforce. You will gain hands-on exposure to the cutting-edge equipment and facilities of Flinders University's new technology precinct at Tonsley, participate in a 12-week industry work integrated placement to test your skills and prepare you for the workforce, and undertake an integrated high-technology design consulting project to put what you learn into practice.

Potential occupations may include product designer, business development manager and innovation strategist; potential employers may include consultancy agencies, public and private organisations.
