Course overview

The Bachelor of Inclusive and Specialised Education (Primary) is an initial teacher education course that prepares students to combine indepth study of the general primary curriculum with studies in inclusive and specialised education. The course aims to support students to becoming effective inclusive teachers of students in the primary years, with specialised knowledge in working with students with disabilities, learning or behavioural difficulties. There is a specific focus on working with children with disabilities and diverse learning needs in Primary School settings (Reception to Year 6).

This course recognises the importance of inclusive education in today's society, and the need for teachers with specialised expertise when teaching learners with diverse needs. Our students are guided through the development of knowledge, skills and attributes that will empower them to teach in inclusive education classrooms and specialised settings. They will learn evidence-based strategies to support all learners in gaining access to participate and progress with their learning whilst establishing learning environments that promote positive wellbeing. In addition to becoming literacy and numeracy specialists, students will graduate from this course with the agency and confidence to apply and adapt their knowledge and skills across a range of contexts, working effectively with all learners in contemporary schools. As an Initial Teacher Education degree, successful completion of the Bachelor of Inclusive and Specialised Education enables you to apply for registration with the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia.

Students will gain the skills employers are seeking with our nationally and internationally recognised transformative curriculum, based on contemporary research understandings of how to prepare effective teachers, learning to create inclusive and specialised challenging curriculum, using technology and teaching skills to extend all children and/or youths. Our graduates are confident advocates for all learners to achieve high quality and equitable outcomes for children, youths and their families, and are work-ready with professional experience placements in schools and/or early childhood settings, where they learn practical skills, put theory into practice, and develop important relationships with students, parents and colleagues.

Professional experience is a critical component of pre-service teacher education as it enables students to integrate theory and practice. Over the four years, students are required to complete a minimum of 80 days of Professional Experience.

Commencing full-time or part-time students in this course will be considered for the Enabling Educator Excellence (E3) Scholarship, funded by the South Australian Government, without having to apply separately, provided they meet the specified criteria.
