Course overview

This course combines substantial parts of the Applied Geology and Finance degrees, and provides a qualification in both areas. The resources sector underpins the Western Australian economy, and graduates of this program have expertise in both the scientific and commercial aspects of resource exploration and development.

The Applied Geology component emphasises the practical application of geological principles to mineral, petroleum and groundwater resources, and their environmental management. The Finance component focuses on investment and corporate finance, and the structure and operation of financial markets.

On completion of the degree, students who have performed well will be eligible to complete an extra year of study to obtain an honours qualification, BH-SCNCE Bachelor of Science (Honours). The research focus of an Honours degree provides a pathway for career advancement at a higher level than the base degree.

Practical Experience / Workbased Learning: The course contains practical and work-relevant components that include practical geological work similar to that conducted in resources and environmental industry settings, including hands-on computing and practical exercises with industry standard software, and geology field trips to various sites.

Professional Recognition: Graduates of this double degree are eligible for membership of the Australian Institute of Geoscientists, the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the Geological Society of Australia, the International Association of Hydrogeologists, and the Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia.
