Course overview

Learn to design, construct and operate mechanical systems. The degree encourages you to push the boundaries, preparing you for the future of mechanical systems engineering. Learn to apply the principles of physics, materials science and mathematics, and build depth of knowledge in materials, mechanics, design, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. Mechanical Engineering at Flinders allows you to specialise in three areas - Advanced Manufacturing & Digital Design, Mechanical Engineering or Nuclear Engineering. The Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) (Honours) is accredited by Engineers Australia at the level of professional engineer and is recognised internationally under the Washington Accord.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) (Honours) has been designed to provide a strong understanding of both the theoretical and the practical aspects of engineering, particularly those relevant to the systematic development of mechanical engineering systems and an awareness of social, economic, cultural and environmental aspects of mechanical engineering.

The degree provides the foundations that will underpin ongoing professional development, preparing graduates for further study or for a career in an engineering related field or in other areas where the range of skills and knowledge acquired is needed or desirable.

City Campus

Flinders City Campus offers a broad range of study areas and is designed for collaborative learning, interactive teaching and industry engagement. Positioned adjacent to the Adelaide Railway Station on North Terrace and central to trams and buses, the City Campus provides students with greater connection, convenience and accessibility.

Practical experience

This degree provides students with the opportunity to gain first-hand industry experience with a 20-week industry placement as part of their degree. One of the longest work placements offered in Australia, it enables students to work alongside professional engineers tackling real-world problems. This degree includes structured engineering work experience and the ability to undertake a substantial research-oriented project.

Nuclear Engineering major

A Nuclear Engineering major is also offered in this degree. Nuclear engineering at Flinders University is offered through a tri-nation academic partnership between Flinders University (Australia), the University of Rhode Island (United States) and Manchester University (United Kingdom. An exchange option is available in the United States through a placement opportunity. Nuclear engineering topics are undertaken in intensive mode over 8 days in summer (January) and winter (July) from Year 2. Students also have the potential to complete the course in 3.5 years (fast-tracked). To be eligible to study this major applicants must be an Australian citizen.

Your career

On completion of this degree students will be able to proficiently use professional skills and knowledge in the systematic development of complex mechanical systems and demonstrate a broad understanding of the mechanical engineering discipline and a deeper understanding of some areas of mechanical engineering. Students will be able to develop engineering solutions appropriate to the social, political, economic and environmental contexts in which they are applied and apply skills adopted through the thesis and advanced discipline topics to postgraduate level research or advanced industrial investigation.

This degree prepares graduates for a career as a professional engineer. Potential occupations may mechanical engineer and process development scientist; potential employers may include mining companies, building services and the automotive industry.
