Course overview

Civil engineering deals with the design and construction of major physical infrastructure including buildings, roads and railways, bridges, airports, dams and pipelines. The problems to be addressed in working with the natural environment, particularly in a low-carbon economy, means that civil engineering is an exciting and wide-ranging discipline. Flinders civil engineering allows you to specialise in four areas - Civil Infrastructure, Environmental Engineering, Structural Engineering or Transport Systems Engineering. The Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) (Honours) is accredited by Engineers Australia at the level of professional engineer and is recognised internationally under the Washington Accord.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) (Honours) has been designed to provide a strong understanding of both the theoretical and the practical aspects of engineering, particularly those relevant to the systematic development of civil engineering systems and an awareness of social, economic, cultural and environmental aspects of civil engineering. This degree includes structured engineering work experience and the ability to undertake a substantial research-oriented project.

The degree provides the foundations that will underpin ongoing professional development, preparing graduates for further study or for a career in an engineering related field or in other areas where the range of skills and knowledge acquired is needed or desirable.

City Campus

Flinders City Campus offers a broad range of study areas and is designed for collaborative learning, interactive teaching and industry engagement. Positioned adjacent to the Adelaide Railway Station on North Terrace and central to trams and buses, the City Campus provides students with greater connection, convenience and accessibility.

Practical experience

This degree provides students with the opportunity to gain first-hand industry experience with a 20-week industry placement as part of their degree. One of the longest work placements offered in Australia, it enables students to work alongside professional engineers tackling real-world problems.

Your career

On completion of this degree students will be able to proficiently use professional skills and knowledge in the systematic development of complex civil infrastructure and demonstrate a broad understanding of the civil engineering discipline and a deeper understanding of some areas of civil engineering. Students will be able to develop engineering solutions appropriate to the social, political, economic and environmental contexts in which they are applied and apply skills adopted through the thesis and advanced discipline topics to postgraduate level research or advanced industrial investigation.

This degree prepares graduates for a career as a professional engineer. Potential occupations may include site engineer, geotechnical engineer and local council manager; potential employers may include design consultancies, government agencies and universities.
