Course overview
Graduates work with individuals, families and communities to identify strategies that can create positive change. They respond to a range of social issues including family conflict, poverty and financial issues, substance abuse, and grief and loss. Students can choose electives in key areas of practice that include domestic violence, Indigenous health, child protection and family practice, and international social work practice. Students complete other electives in areas such as public health. Students examine contemporary social issues, social policy, sociological concepts, Indigenous perspectives, and human rights and ethics. They also explore career paths with 1000 hours of professional placement experiences in direct service support, advocacy services, and policy development. An honours program based on GPA is available at the end of year 2.

If you have already completed a bachelor degree which includes the equivalent of one year (8 units) of full-time studies in social science, the Master of Social Work -Qualifying at QUT offers an shorter pathway to becoming a registered social worker.
