Course overview

Speech pathologists diagnose and treat people who have communication and/or swallowing disabilities. The course develops the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills needed to work with people with disorders in speech, language, voice, fluency, and swallowing. Studies include anatomy/physiology, linguistics/phonetics, and specialised topics in communication impairments and swallowing disorders in adults and children. This course also focuses on rural and remote practice, speech pathology issues relevant to Indigenous people, and on interdisciplinary learning. Clinical placements commence in second year and continue in third and fourth years. Students must travel outside Townsville for at least one of two eight-week block placements in fourth year.
