Course overview

The Bachelor of Laws / Bachelor of Computer Science provides an accredited qualification in law whilst providing students with a focus on developing expertise in software development and computer science. The degree provides students with a broad, well-rounded legal education that inculcates an understanding of the role the law plays in our society and of how it can assist Australia as a trading nation. Students receive extensive education in contemporary approaches to the analysis, design and implementation of large-scale systems, along with a sound understanding of the traditional aspects of computer science such as hardware and operating systems. Like all IT courses at Swinburne, this course pays particular attention to the human factors involved in the development, deployment and use of computer-based systems. There is a focus on applications involving mobile and web-based systems, with an emphasis on the design of effective human-computer interfaces. A range of options in the degree allows students to study advanced subjects in computer science areas including artificial intelligence, computer networks, database, enterprise systems and programming languages. Graduates of this course will have extensive skills in system development, particularly relating to medium- and large-scale projects, will have developed experience in working on team projects, and will have well-developed oral and written communication skills.

This course uses the ATAR as part of its selection considerations.

Guaranteed ATAR: If you receive an ATAR of 80.00 or higher and complete all the requirements for this course, you will be guaranteed an offer.

Regional Adjustments

Swinburne offers a regional adjustment for applicants from outer regional and remote communities.

These applicants will automatically receive regional adjustment factors if they:

  • apply for a course for which assessment is based on ATAR
  • are currently studying Year 12, or Year 12 is their highest level of study

Swinburne will automatically apply regional adjustment factors to an applicant's aggregate score based on location.

Applicants are not required to apply for this consideration.

Educational history

An applicant's entire academic history, including ATAR results, VET and higher education study will be considered for entry into this course.

Subject adjustment

A study score of 25 in any Business, any Humanities, any Information Technology, any LOTE, any Mathematics or any Science equals 2 aggregate points per study.

A study score of 30 in any Business, any Humanities, any Information Technology, any LOTE, any Mathematics or any Science equals 3 aggregate points per study.

Overall maximum of 12 points.

SEAS (Special Entry Access Scheme)

Applicants who have experienced educational disadvantage are encouraged to apply for the Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS).

Depending on eligibility and your circumstances, a SEAS application may provide support for your course application.

Entire academic record

This course uses the entire academic record as part of its selection considerations.

An applicant's entire academic history from the past 7 years, including ATAR results, will be considered for entry into this course.

Applicants who have completed post-secondary studies at undergraduate level i.e. bachelor and above, will be considered for this course.

Also considered are incomplete undergraduate studies and complete and/or incomplete VET studies undertaken within the last 7 years.

Mathematics prerequisites older than 10 years are not considered to have met course requirements.

Applicants with VET study

Applicants with complete and/or incomplete post-secondary studies at the VET level within the last 7 years will be also considered.

Applicants with work and life experience

An applicant's ATAR results from the last 7 years will be considered for entry into this course.

English requirement
