Students must complete at least one major, with options to complement this with a second major, up to two minors, and a range of electives.

Practical experience
Students will complete a minimum 140-hour placement in the second or third year of their degree program. There will be a variety of opportunities available to undertake a placement in their desired career field, including museums, libraries and archives, arts and cultural organisations, non-government organisations, and local, state and commonwealth public service.
Honours
Available as an additional year (or part-time equivalent) to students based on merit in most of the major study areas.

Employment options for graduates are linked with your chosen areas of specialisation and may include roles in local, state and commonwealth public service, non-government organisations, higher education, media and communications, museums, libraries and archives, arts and cultural organisations, as well as other diverse sectors which are increasingly calling for employees possessing skills developed by the Bachelor of Arts.

Areas of study
English and writing, film, French studies, German, global Indigenous studies, history, human geography and the environment, international relations, Japanese studies, linguistics, politics and international relations, psychology studies, screen and cultural studies and sociology, and anthropology. Additional minors are also available in ancient history, Chinese, education, gender and sexuality studies, information technology, studies of philosophy, religion and ethics, violence studies, writing studies.

Advanced Standing
If you have completed prior studies at another higher education institution or registered training organisation, you may be eligible to receive credit towards your undergraduate degree. Please note that you must apply for admission before applying for credit.

Standard entry
- Applicants with recent secondary education Recommended studies: English Advanced. For psychology studies major: Mathematics Advanced. If you have not previously studied one or more of these subjects or have limited knowledge in them, we strongly encourage you to consider enrolling in bridging courses. Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study If you completed or partially completed competency-based vocational education and training (such as TAFE, a private Registered Training Provider, or vocational studies undertaken in high school), this can be used to determine your eligibility for admission. Applicants with work and life experience If you do not have an ATAR (or equivalent) or formal qualification, Newcastle University provides a range of pathways toward your preferred degree. If the student's current English result is below the direct-entry requirement, consider the university's recognised English language pathway or ELICOS package. When the student successfully completes the approved pathway at the required level, the university may accept that pathway for English entry without requiring a new IELTS, TOEFL or PTE result.
