The Bachelor of Psychological Science/Master of Teaching (Primary) is a new course commencing in 2026, which offers students the unique opportunity to gain a deep foundation in Psychology to support a career in teaching. This fast-tracked course will see you graduate with two degrees in just four and a half years.

The Master of Teaching (Primary) component of this vertical degree is comprised of a graduate entry, pre-service teacher education course for those who want to qualify as a primary school teacher. You will graduate with specialist knowledge and understanding of not only literacy and numeracy but of all learning areas within the primary school curriculum. This course will enable you to engage with the breadth of curriculum and pedagogical knowledge required by a primary classroom teacher.

While the Bachelor of Psychological Science offers a sequence in Psychology for students to develop a scientific understanding of human behaviour and psychological principles, exploring how the mind works and why people behave the way they do. You will graduate from the degree having completed a sequence in Psychology accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as a Level 1 Program. The degree also helps you prepare for optional further studies which may lead to registration as a professional psychologist.

Professional recognition

Graduates are eligible for registration as primary school teachers in government, independent, Catholic, and other faith-based schools. This new double degree is currently seeking accreditation from the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) and Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) for 2025 onwards. Please note that after completion of an APAC-accredited undergraduate degree, a further minimum of three years education and training in psychology are required to register as a psychologist in Australia.

Practical experience

Supervised professional experience is at the heart of all our pre-service teacher education courses and the faculty will find appropriate placements to suit the needs of your course. Professional experience units are planned as a specific sequence allowing for progressive development of both classroom-based proficiency and an understanding of the relevance of theory to practice and practice to theory. These units apply skills, techniques and processes taught in the Foundations Studies and Professional Studies units.

The practicum will be supported by other forms of in-school experiences, such as school-based tutorials and workshops.
