Course overview
The Bachelor of Education (Primary)* program qualifies graduates for teaching in primary school settings. Recognised by the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia, the Bachelor of Education (Primary) combines educational theory and classroom learning, with a multitude of hands-on teaching opportunities. The degree offers contemporary coursework, exposure to the latest learning technologies, and the integration of theory and practice. In addition to acquiring the academic skills needed to teach primary school age children, students will also be required to choose one specialist subject area such as Mathematics, Science, English, Humanities, Special Needs, Service Learning and Social Justice and Theatre Studies. The practical component of the degree involves 32 weeks of teaching practice spread across four years. This extensive teaching apprenticeship provides a total immersion in the classroom environment, exposing students to the lived experience of a teacher.
Education students in WA must sit the national Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE). The test is administered externally by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). Education students also need to successfully complete the Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment after their final teaching placement in order to graduate from this program.
The Bachelor of Science offers a qualification grounded in the scientific pursuit of knowledge and understanding and delivered as a contemporary package that caters for the breadth of emerging careers in our rapidly changing world. A liberal and interdisciplinary approach to science education is coupled with flexible program streams that include the study of archaeological, environmental, biological and human sciences. In this way students can follow their interests while acquiring professionally relevant and transferrable knowledge and skills. At the centre of the program is a focus on the development of fundamental skills in systematic and reproducible investigation, data analysis, critical thinking, problem solving and effective communication. Across the program, theory and practice are integrated through the use of diverse learning settings, from the laboratory and field, to industry contexts.
*This degree is being realigned to a national degree that is planned to start from 2025.
