Course overview
The Bachelor of Education (Primary)* program qualifies graduates for teaching in primary school settings. Recognised by the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia, the Bachelor of Education (Primary) combines educational theory and classroom learning, with a multitude of hands-on teaching opportunities. The degree offers contemporary coursework, exposure to the latest learning technologies, and the integration of theory and practice. In addition to acquiring the academic skills needed to teach primary school age children, students will also be required to choose one specialist subject area such as Mathematics, Science, English, Humanities, Special Needs, Service Learning and Social Justice and Theatre Studies. The practical component of the degree involves 32 weeks of teaching practice spread across four years. This extensive teaching apprenticeship provides a total immersion in the classroom environment, exposing students to the lived experience of a teacher.
Education students in WA must sit the national Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE). The test is administered externally by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). Education students also need to successfully complete the Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment after their final teaching placement in order to graduate from this program.
Bachelor of Arts graduates think critically, creatively and ethically to solve problems and are culturally and globally aware. They have research and communication skills and can work both autonomously and with others. Students develop core skills through in-depth study of at least one major discipline area, selected from the traditional humanities, social and behavioural sciences, and/or communications and media. In upper year levels, students may undertake specialised learning that complements their professional and/or personal interests. Internships enable students to apply knowledge and skills in the workplace and to hone work-ready aptitudes. Students can also take advantage of short and long-term international learning opportunities through the Experience the World and Study Abroad programs. Arts graduates are valued across a range of industries and workplaces, and are well-placed to make a life-long contribution to the intellectual, cultural and civic life of communities.
*This degree is being realigned to a national degree that is planned to start from 2025.
