Course overview

The Curtin University Medical School offers a five year direct-entry Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree. Curtin recognises the complex issues facing the Western Australian health system, its workforce and the need for more doctors to be “generalists” in their orientation. This means we are committed to producing graduates who are better equipped to meet community needs, with primary care expertise, strong leadership skills and the ability to operate effectively in interprofessional care teams.

The degree is primarily for school leavers who have completed Year 12 or equivalent and do not have a higher degree record (School leavers who have participated in the Innovative Schools Scholars Program in Year 10 or Year 11 are exempted from the requirement not to have a higher degree record). In addition to a minimum target of 25% of students from rural backgrounds, additional places are prioritised for Indigenous applicants from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds, and for equity applicants from schools with an Index of Community and Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA) score of 1,000 and below, averaged over three years, or who are classified as experiencing financial hardship. A small number of places each year are also set aside for Curtin Course Switchers and Non-School Leavers who have completed a higher degree.

Eligible Rural, Equity and Indigenous applicants must apply for these pathways by the published deadline. For more information on eligibility, the application process and deadlines, please read the MBBS Admissions Guide.
