Course overview

The Secondary Education degree provides a qualification enabling you to teach students in Years 7-12 in government, Catholic and independent secondary schools, whilst at the same time allowing you to pursue another specialist interest. This major will prepare you with content and pedagogical knowledge to teach in the Politics & Law subject area in Years 11 and 12, as well as across the Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) curriculum area from Years 7 to 12.

You will also choose a second teaching area specialisation, which can be:

  • a minor teaching area in an area other than HASS in the school curriculum; OR
  • units that broaden your understanding of HASS content and extend your curriculum and pedagogical knowledge HASS; OR
  • further your studies in an education specialty, such as Catholic Education

Practical Experience / Workbased Learning: This course has practicums.

Professional Recognition: This course is accredited by the Teachers’ Registration Board of WA (TRBWA), and is recognised nationally as an initial teacher education qualification. Graduates can register as a teacher in Australia and other countries that recognise Australian teaching qualifications.

Internships: The final professional experience placement is referred to as the Internship and is conducted over one school term in a full time block mode. The Internship is undertaken in a school setting. There may be opportunities for a country WA or interstate Internship placement.
