Course overview

This degree provides both the theoretical paradigms and the practical skills required to design and implement computer-based systems. You will also learn mathematical concepts used to understand, model and describe the world around us to solve a wide range of both theoretical and real-world problems. Gain skills in core computing technologies and knowledge of general computing and programming to an Honours level. Complete your Master of Science (Mathematics) to enhance your knowledge of computer science fundamentals. This degree is accredited by the Australian Computer Society at the professional level. Professional ICT courses accredited by the Australian Computer Society are recognised internationally under the Seoul Accord. Graduates meet the academic requirements for attaining chartered status as ICT professionals.

This double degree has been designed to provide students with a strong foundation in both the theoretical and the practical aspects of computer science and build on their existing mathematics, research knowledge and professional skills to progress to a Masters degree. Throughout the degree, students will develop the ability to critically analyse and evaluate information and solve problems, taking into consideration social, economic, cultural, and environmental aspects of computer science.

On completion of the Honours year, and subject to meeting minimum academic requirements, students will progress to the Masters component of the double degree where there's an emphasis on applied mathematics, and all the major areas of mathematics, including calculus, linear algebra, analysis and statistics are covered, culminating in a major project. The Masters builds upon previous knowledge to provide an advanced perspective on mathematics and statistics, including the ability to critically appraise the formulation of modern mathematics.

Students can opt to research areas of topical concerns in industry and society preparing graduates for further enrolment in a research degree or employment in a mathematical related field and computer science professions such as cryptanalyst, quantitative researcher, data analyst, applied statistician, business intelligence developer and information security analyst.
