Course overview
Arts therapy and creative arts therapies is an emerging, but growing profession; it is increasingly being recognised as contributing a unique approach to allied health teams in health and community settings. It is can be effective in engaging people who may struggle to participate in traditional ‘talking therapies’. The experience of expressing thoughts and feelings through creative activity can improve physical, emotional, cognitive and social integration and functioning, and be instrumental in facilitating change.
The Bachelor of Arts Therapy is designed to you a broad knowledge of psychotherapy and therapeutic skills, with emphasis on the techniques and processes of arts therapy. You will learn to use a range of modalities including visual arts, sculpture, movement, drama, voice and storytelling. Electives include a range of innovative and contemporary fields of practice such as eco-psychotherapy, art and social action, Indigenous approaches to health and wellbeing, and dreams and symbols.
The course is suitable for students with no prior learning in arts psychotherapy as well as those who may have completed an art therapy course and wish to develop their knowledge and skills to integrate arts therapy into their existing work as a practitioner.

Professional Recognition: Graduates are eligible to apply for Tier Membership with ANZACATA.
Practical Experience Placements: You will complete professional placement totalling 480 hours across four practicum subjects. Placements are drawn from a variety of settings and provide the opportunity to work with adults, children and groups.
Clearances: You are required to evidence a police check prior to the commencement of placement and, those who will be conducting placement with children, are required to have the appropriate clearance to ensure child-safe environments. As the application process differs from State to State, you should commence the process three months prior to the first placement. Applicants with a criminal history are advised to complete this process prior to enrolment.

Career Opportunities
Art therapists work as solo practitioners or as part of multidisciplinary teams across a range of therapeutic settings including private practice, community health, schools, hospitals, mental health facilities, disability services, aged care, addiction services and rehabilitation facilities. Graduates may also undertake postgraduate study in this discipline.
