If you want to contribute to solving the environmental problems facing our society, and have a passion for sustainability, then the Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management is for you.
The University of Newcastle provides the opportunity to explore the science behind human-induced impacts. You'll learn to understand and combat the critical issues placing a growing strain on the earth’s natural resources such as climate change, human impacts, and the biodiversity crisis. Majors include: Ecosystems and biodiversity, marine science and management, natural resource and hazards, sustainability.
Studies include biological and earth processes, conservation and restoration , environmental planning and impact assessment, environmental remote sensing and computer-based mapping, environmental sampling and data analysis, environmental values, sustainability and ethics, land management, plus social development and the environment.
Other Information
Professional recognition
Depending on your area of study, you can gain professional recognition with the Hunter Environmental Institute, Australian Ecology Society, Australian Wildlife Management Society, Birds Australia, Australian Mammal Society and Australian Society of Herpetology.
Practical experience
Students will complete a 140-hour work placement in a private sector, government or community organisation. There is also the option to undertake overseas field courses.
Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management students are also eligible to enrol in International Study.
Fieldwork is a strong focus of the program and is complemented by practical lab work using professional equipment.
Honours
Available as an additional year (or part-time equivalent) to meritorious students.

- Applicants with recent secondary education Assumed knowledge: Mathematics Advanced plus one of Earth and Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology or equivalent. Recommended studies: Earth and Environmental Science. If you have not previously studied one or more of these subjects or have limited knowledge in them, we strongly encourage you to consider enrolling in bridging courses. If the student's current English result is below the direct-entry requirement, consider the university's recognised English language pathway or ELICOS package.
