Course overview

The Bachelor of Information Technology is a three-year full-time [or part-time equivalent] course that enables students to acquire a broad and coherent knowledge of the key theories and practices that underpin the practice of Information Technology professionals, who operate in dynamic business contexts. While the BIT offers a broad focus on Information technology, covering programming, networking, security and data management, it has a coherent focus on Software Development and Cyber Security.

Throughout the course, students will acquire knowledge and skills in the underlying principles, concepts and technical knowledge that inform the work of IT professionals as well as broader management principles. They will be able to apply their IT knowledge and skills to a range of industrial activities. They will develop a depth of knowledge in the areas database systems, networking, security and/or software development. They will develop a team based operational style. They will use IT to generate information and solve problems. They will be able to provide a professional level of advice on IT matters. This knowledge and these skills will be applied in a manner which is reinforced by ethical judgement and effective communication.

Graduate attributes

As IT is a fundamental infrastructure, graduates of the CIHE BIT will be able to work in a range of workplace contexts and environments. A conceptual framework for information technology is likely to inform a much wider range of jobs, beyond the boundaries of the IT profession.

Over the entire program students will acquire the necessary attributes that will distinguish them as a graduate of the Institute. A graduate of Crown Institute of Higher Education will possess comprehensive knowledge in their discipline area and be able to apply that knowledge effectively in the workplace. They will be able to identify problems and work pro-actively and creatively to develop solutions and to generate, analyse and interpret different types of information to inform and support decision-making processes. They will be able to do the following: think logically and critically to analyse and solve problems; work with high levels of autonomy; be independent thinkers; engage with others proactively and collaboratively for continued personal and professional development; act ethically and with an awareness of cultural diversity and will have developed their communication skills.

Modes of study and assessment

At CIHE we provide workshop-based engaged learning.

All our units involve participation in 3 hours of on-campus workshop per week for 12 weeks. Each week’s workshop will require preparation – reading, activities and online work.

All our units are supported by an online learning management system – Moodle.

We use a range of assessment tasks at CIHE to help you monitor your learning – quizzes, group work, case-studies and scenario-based activities, reports and exams. Our assessment tasks are designed to be work-oriented, that is, they are designed to mimic the real world processes involved in business so that you will be ready to start your career as an active independent professional.
