Bachelor of Music

The Bachelor of Music provides specialisations for composers, performers and musicologists. It provides you with professional and performance experience as a creator of music. The degree incorporates significant industry experience and other experiential learning opportunities. 

This course allows you to work with world-class musicians to develop your skills as an emerging artist. You'll have the opportunity to pursue postgraduate training in many areas, including national and international centres of music excellence, helping you become career-ready for the creative arts industry.

Career Opportunities

Graduates pursue careers in the creative and performing arts, music education, the entertainment industry and associated fields. Many graduates have careers as performing musicians, either with an orchestra or ensemble, as conductors or composers, or a combination of these. Others go on to become music administrators, music or arts managers, music journalists or music teachers. Recent graduate destinations include the Australian National Academy of Music, Oxford University, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, the Royal Academy of Music and the Academy of Ancient Music.

Majors
Music (Extended Major)

This extended major degree provides you with a rigorous, high-quality tertiary music education and an intensive concentration in a chosen area of specialisation: performance, composition, studio teaching, musicology or creative music technology. As a well-equipped 21st century musician, you’ll have the opportunity to pursue postgraduate training in many areas, including national and international centres of music excellence, and prepare for a career in the creative arts.


Prerequisites:

  • ATAR of at least 75
  • Complete a successful audition and interview with Conservatorium staff


Streams and requirements

Performance/Musicology/Studio Teaching Streams:

  • A practical requirement equivalent to AMEB Grade 7, demonstrated by an audition
  • A strong background in music theory

Composition Stream:

  • A practical requirement equivalent to AMEB Grade 5, demonstrated by an audition
  • A strong background in music theory
  • A portfolio is also required

Entry requirements

Switch between domestic ATAR data and international qualification equivalents.

IB Diploma

Use the ATAR 70 band together with the relevant qualification and prerequisite requirements.
