Course overview
What makes the Bachelor of Marine Science and Master of Oceanography at UWA different is our location along the expansive Western Australian coastline. We have access to pristine rocky reefs and beaches along the South Coast to the coral reefs of the Pilbara and Kimberley regions. This diversity creates an excellent living laboratory for studying marine science and oceanography. This course is structured as a four-year accelerated Combined Bachelor and Master program for those with an ATAR of 90 or above.
In your first three years, you'll complete the Marine Science (Extended Major) and a semester of postgraduate study. This extended major will expose you to the full breadth of the marine science discipline, allowing deeper understanding of both the physical and biological components through the Marine Biology and Coastal Processes majors.
You'll then complete a final year of postgraduate study in the Master of Oceanography The master's component has core units that seek to ensure that you'll develop strong interdisciplinary knowledge and technical skills to take advantage of diverse career opportunities in government, industry, consultancies and research institutions.
Why study this course at UWA:
- Learning in the specialised Bachelor of Marine Science is richly embedded with internationally recognised research and will encourage research-based inquiry through cutting-edge science
- The Master of Oceanography is the only course of its kind in Australia
- Western Australia's unique position on the Indian Ocean provides a natural laboratory for earth and ocean studies

This major will expose you to the full breadth of the marine science discipline, allowing deeper understanding of both the physical and biological components through the Marine Biology and Marine and Coastal Processes majors. WA's coastline is a biodiversity hotspot with up to 80 per cent of marine life found nowhere else in the world, making it the ideal living laboratory for your studies.
Prerequisites:
- Mathematics Methods ATAR OR Mathematics Applications ATAR with a mathematics unit taken in the first year
- Students without ATAR Mathematics will take two first-year mathematics units
- Chemistry ATAR or an additional chemistry unit taken in the first year.
This course emphasises learning through practical work to gain knowledge and skills in oceanography encompassing scientific and engineering elements of dynamic coastal zones and seafloor geology. You'll also utilise your field and laboratory-based skills in terrestrial and marine systems and oceanography to further develop your knowledge of the physical, chemical, geological and biological processes operating in coastal and deep marine environment.
Career Opportunities
Oceanographer, Coastal Manager/Officer, Coastal Geologist, Meteorologist, Applied Ocean Scientist, Climate Scientist, Ocean Data Scientist and more
