Course overview

The Bachelor of Earth Sciences and Master of Geoscience will encourage you to create a more sustainable future for our planet through a holistic approach to understanding the Earth and its oceans. You'll learn about past and present earth processes which are crucial for predicting future changes in our environment and climate, as well as contributing to the management of vital resources. This course is structured as a four-year accelerated Combined Bachelor Master's program for those with an ATAR of 90 or above. By completing this Combined Bachelor and Master course, you will graduate with both a Bachelor of Earth Sciences and a Master of Geoscience.

In your first three years you will complete the Integrated Earth and Marine Sciences (Extended Major) which focuses on key knowledge and practical skills in the collection and interpretation of scientific data in both terrestrial and marine settings as well as data analysis and synthesis techniques, followed by a semester of postgraduate study.

You will then complete a final year of postgraduate study in the Master of Geoscience. The master's component of this course includes core units that seek to ensure you have strong interdisciplinary and disciplinary knowledge and technical skills in geoscience to take advantage of diverse career opportunities in industry, government, consultancies and research institutions.

Integrated Earth and Marine Sciences (Extended Major)

This extended major offers a research-led experience in studying the Earth, from the planet’s early history to its foreseeable future, and from the ocean floors to its highest mountains. You'll learn high-level skills in the collection and interpretation of geoscientific data, in both terrestrial and marine settings, as well as advanced data analysis and synthesis techniques.

Prerequisites:

  • Mathematics Methods ATAR OR Mathematics Applications ATAR with a mathematics unit taken in the first year
  • Students without ATAR Mathematics will take two first-year mathematics units

Master of Geoscience

This course develops your abilities to gather and interpret geological information for a wide range of applications. With the majority of Australia’s mineral and petroleum resources found in Western Australia, UWA is in a prime location for you to strengthen your geoscientific knowledge and skills in gathering and interpreting geological information for a wide range of applications.
