Course overview

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary)* is a comprehensive undergraduate program that combines theory, the latest teaching technology, and many opportunities for practical classroom experience. Working from a rigorous and practical curriculum, students will acquire the requisite academic and practical skills needed to teach early and late adolescents. In addition, the students will be required to choose one major teaching area such as English, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Science or Religious Education. Students will complete eight courses in the major learning area, plus four courses in a specialisation learning area.

An integral part of the program is 32 weeks of supervised teaching (practicum) experience. During these four professional experience placements, students will be required to teach in both their major and specialisation learning areas as well as immerse themselves in a secondary school community.

The Bachelor of Science offers a qualification grounded in the scientific pursuit of knowledge and understanding and delivered as a contemporary package that caters for the breadth of emerging careers in our rapidly changing world. A liberal and interdisciplinary approach to science education is coupled with flexible program streams that include the study of archaeological, environmental, biological and human sciences. In this way students can follow their interests while acquiring professionally relevant and transferrable knowledge and skills. At the centre of the program is a focus on the development of fundamental skills in systematic and reproducible investigation, data analysis, critical thinking, problem solving and effective communication. Across the program, theory and practice are integrated through the use of diverse learning settings, from the laboratory and field, to industry contexts. This preparation builds confidence, independence and self-directed learning which broadens opportunities for graduates in the private, government and not-for-profit sectors and opens pathways to postgraduate research.

*This degree is being realigned to a national degree that is planned to start from 2025.
