Course overview

Secondary teachers play a vital role in helping young people navigate an important stage of intellectual, social and personal growth. Teaching adolescents requires strong disciplinary knowledge; skilled classroom practice; and the ability to build relationships that support engagement, wellbeing and a love of learning. As national priorities shift and new educational challenges emerge, secondary teachers also need the capability to interpret evidence, address key learning indicators and respond to diverse classroom needs. The Master of Teaching (Secondary) will prepare you to teach your chosen disciplines with confidence, academic depth and contemporary pedagogical skill. You’ll study evidence-based approaches to teaching adolescents, develop strategies for improving student wellbeing and behaviour, identify ways to use technology to enhance engagement and learning, and gain practical experience through supported placements with partner schools. With guidance from leading academics and a strong focus on subject expertise, inclusive practice and the realities of secondary schooling, you’ll graduate with the professional judgement and capability needed to teach in secondary settings or contribute to curriculum planning, educational research and policy development.
