Course overview

High-quality research lays the foundation for cutting-edge innovation, technological advancement, economic growth and knowledge expansion. In the fields of science and engineering, such research has been responsible for discoveries that have transformed society and shaped the modern world – discoveries such as space exploration, nanotechnology and biomedical engineering. Today, ongoing research continues to innovate across an increasingly wide range of areas, including renewable energy, clean water technologies, artificial intelligence, robotics and sustainable development. The Master of Research in Science and Engineering is a unique postgraduate research training degree that will equip you to complete a PhD within three years, if further research is your goal. With mentoring from experts in your field, you’ll specialise in research preparation and focus on a specific research topic at the sub-discipline level to deliver a 20,000-word thesis. The degree also provides a strong background for employment in a range of national and international non-academic settings.

Postgraduate entry

A high level of English language proficiency

  • Completion of the MQ Graduate Diploma of Research with a WAM of 65+
  • an AQF 8 or higher award (Bachelor Honours, Graduate Diploma, Master by coursework) from a recognised institution in a related field of study or equivalent
  • Applicants with MQ qualifications from 2020 onwards (WAM): 65 overall, and 70 in the final year of a Bachelor Honours or highest level study.
  • All other applicants (GPA): 4.38/7 overall, and 5.25/7 in the final year of a Bachelor Honours or highest level of study .
English requirement
IELTS Academic 6.5, no band below 6

If your current English result is below direct entry, consider the university-recognised English language pathway or ELICOS package; successful completion at the required level can usually satisfy English entry without another English test.
