Course overview

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) (MTSA) is an initial teacher education (ITE) degree that prepares pre service teachers (PSTs) to teach in secondary educational settings. PSTs enrolled in the MTSA will develop in depth curriculum and pedagogy knowledge in teaching specialist areas aligned with state and national curriculum frameworks. The course provides a balance of education learning theory with specialised content knowledge and applied pedagogical approaches.

Entry requirements

Postgraduate and higher courses usually use academic prerequisites, degree equivalence and English-language requirements.

Postgraduate entry

Applicants must normally hold a degree (in an area other than education or teaching) or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution, and have studied two of the following teaching/curriculum areas, one of which can be a minor: Business Studies, Drama, English, Geography, Health Education, History, Information Technology, Legal Studies, Mathematics, Modern Languages (restricted to Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian, German and Modern Greek), Music, Nutrition, Outdoor Education, Physical Education, Psychology, Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Sciences), TESOL, Tourism, Visual Arts.

Not all teaching/curriculum areas are offered every year.

Applicants must normally have completed topics that enable them to teach in South Australia to Year 12 in at least one subject specialisation and to Year 10 in a second subject specialisation.

Applicants who hold a degree and have studied one of the teaching/curriculum areas may also be considered if this was equivalent to a major.

Applicants must normally have achieved a Flinders equivalent grade point average (GPA) of 4.00 or above for consideration.

Applicants must complete a non academic assessment task known as a Teaching Capabilities Statement as part of their application to demonstrate their motivation to teach, their strong interpersonal and communication skills, willingness to learn, resilience, self efficacy, and strong organisational and planning skills.

This involves a short statement in response to three set questions used to demonstrate suitability for study and work in the teaching profession.

English requirement
IELTS Academic 7, no band below 7

If your current English result is below direct entry, consider the university-recognised English language pathway or ELICOS package; successful completion at the required level can usually satisfy English entry without another English test.
