Bachelor of Criminology (Honours)

The Bachelor of Criminology (Honours) is designed for applicants who have the goal of completing an Honours year Criminology. It prepares graduates with the skills and knowledge needed to truly understand crime and make a real impact in the criminal justice sector and related fields. You will be able to communicate criminological knowledge effectively across a range of technologies and audiences, and use an ethical and compassionate lens to approach the study of crime and justice, in order to foster connection across cultural, socio-economic, and jurisdictional boundaries.

There are four majors available within this degree: Strategy & Analysis, Criminal Justice, Cybersecurity & Cybercrime and Social Justice. Pursue one of these majors to explore an area of specialised interest and focus your future career, or choose your own adventure and discover areas you're particularly passionate about as you study.

The core topics give students a strong understanding of the complex forces shaping crime, criminalisation and society's response. Our curriculum is future-focused, exploring innovative ways of promoting community safety. Our students learn critical-thinking skills, enabling them to apply evidence and challenge stereotypes about crime, victims, and criminalised people. Students will develop a critical, compassionate and person-centred perspective to become changemakers.
With optional topics, students can tailor their learning to match their interests and career aspirations, whether they prefer a broad range of study or a more focused program.

In the Honours year of study, students will develop project management, research, and academic writing skills and extend their knowledge and understanding of criminology through a passion project of their own. Students will undertake research within areas of academic specialisation and have opportunities to engage with industry partners to prepare for future careers.

Practical experience

This degree provides students with practical experience that prepares them for the workforce. Students will develop research and analytical skills in addition to studying practical topics that equip them for employment in intelligence analysis, community corrections, community development, and child safety work.

Students can undertake a work placement program during honours and receive on-the-job training in an area of interest with one of our diverse partners and providers such as state and federal government agencies, and the private and not-for-profit sectors.

Your career

On completion of the degree students will be able to critically examine the causes, experiences, and ways of preventing crime and social harm, through both individual and systemic lenses. Graduates will be able to communicate criminological knowledge effectively across a range of technologies and audiences, and use an ethical and compassionate lens to approach the study of crime and justice, in order to foster connection across cultural, socio-economic, and jurisdictional boundaries.

Graduates have enjoyed a wide choice of careers and diverse employment trajectories in Australia and overseas. Many move into employment in the criminal and social justice sectors. Potential occupations may include Police Officer, Forensic Investigator, Corrections Officer, Defence/Intelligence Officer.

Combining degrees enables students to follow their interests and aspirations and enhance their career prospects by undertaking a second area of study in addition to their primary degree. Completing an approved combined degree option will normally add at least one extra year (full-time equivalent) to their studies. For example, students combining two three-year full-time equivalent degrees are normally able to complete both degrees in four years of full-time equivalent study.
