Course overview

In this five year double degree, you can study exercise science and sport science with a clinical exercise physiology focus. You will be able to use evidence-based science as a means of preventative care, maximise sporting performance and prevent injury in this fast growing sector. You will also learn to deliver preventative exercise programs and exercise interventions for the management of chronic and complex conditions. Graduates of this degree will be eligible to apply for membership with Exercise and Sport Science Australia as an Exercise Scientist and the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology has qualifying accreditation status with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA).

Students will be able to apply integrated exercise science and physiology knowledge and skills to manage disorders across the lifespan in a wide variety of settings including rural and remote locations, with both individuals and various populations, Students will also be able to apply advanced cognitive and technical skills to design, implement and evaluate safe and effective exercise interventions, based on referral information, presenting pathologies and co-morbidities, clinical reasoning, pre-intervention assessments and the analysis, interpretation and application of scientific evidence.

Within the program students can choose a Coursework or Coursework/Research stream and have the option of a completing a minor in either Disability or Rural and Remote Health.

Practical experience

The degree provides students with practical experience that prepares them for the workforce. It requires students to complete a minimum of 500 practicum hours over the program of study - a minimum of 140 hours of practicum in exercise delivery within the Bachelor of Exercise and sport science, and a minimum of 360 hours of clinical practicum in the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology).

Your career

Graduates will specialise in the delivery of exercise for the prevention and management of chronic diseases and injuries and will be able to research and apply key theoretical and practice approaches within exercise science and physiology and interpret and transmit an integrated knowledge of the sub-disciplines of exercise science and exercise physiology. Students will research and apply advanced cognitive and technical skills to select, design or modify and then analyse, interpret and apply assessment protocols and methodologies appropriate to the client and situation for acute, sub-acute and chronic disease and injury management, workplace health and rehabilitation and other clinical exercise services.

The degree is designed to enable practice across a range of settings, including rural and remote areas and prepares students to become a contemporary, client-centred health professional, able to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team in places such as hospitals, gymnasiums, aged care facilities, schools, universities and TAFE. Potential occupations include exercise or sport scientist, health and injury prevention advisor, sport and exercise science support officer.

Postgraduate entry

Recent secondary

  • Qualify for the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) or equivalent recent year 12 qualification (including the International Baccalaureate Diploma), and achieve a competitive selection rank.
  • Year 12 Grades Pathway: Applicants who have not achieved the Selection Rank required for automatic selection into their preferred course may be offered based on their year 12 subject grades.
  • Research Project B: If you have strong results in the SACE Research Project B subject you will be considered for entry into this course on your Year 12 results combined with your Research Project B performance.

If the combined score does not result in an enhanced selection rank, you will compete in the normal way.

  • UniTEST: If you are completing an Australian Year 12 qualification this year, uniTEST is available to enhance your chances of getting into this course.

We will select students based on Year 12 results combined with uniTEST performance.

If you take the test and dont do so well, dont worry, we will only consider your ATAR Selection Rank.

If you have studied at higher education level for a total of more than two years, you are not eligible to use your year 12 results.

Higher Ed

  • Completed or partially completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution,
  • Completed a University Foundation Studies, Bridging or Enabling program

If you have studied at higher education level in the last two years, you must not have accumulated more than a total of two full-time years of higher education study in order to use your bridging program results.

Work-Life Other

  • Completed a non-recent SACE or equivalent secondary education qualification with a competitive selection rank, including the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB),
  • STAT multiple choice test.

If you have studied at higher education level in the last two years, you must not have accumulated more than a total of two full-time years of higher education study in order to use your STAT results.

VET

  • Completed an award from a registered training organisation at Certificate III level or above.

TAFElink is a guaranteed entry pathway if youve completed a TAFE/VET Certificate IV or higher level qualification (provided you meet the course prerequisite requirements).

IELTS Academic 6.5, no band below 6

If your current English result is below direct entry, consider the university-recognised English language pathway or ELICOS package; successful completion at the required level can usually satisfy English entry without another English test.
