Course overview
The Bachelor of Medical Science has been designed to produce graduates who as medical scientists are specialists in a major area of science and possess well-developed skills to liaise with other groups of scientists, such as medical practitioners and biotechnologists. This specialised degree covers areas such as biochemistry, biotechnology, microbiology, molecular biology, neuroscience and more. It provides exciting options for students interested in a wide range of careers in the medical and health sciences, and emphasises the fundamental sciences that underpin virtually all fields of medical science.
There are five majors available within this degree: Health & Medical Research, Immunology & Infectious Diseases, Molecular Medicine & Physiology, Neuroscience & Anatomy and Medical Studies. Practical experience
This degree provides students with practical experience that prepares them for the workforce. Students will undertake a professional placement in their third year of study, developing hands-on experience in a laboratory setting and important practical skills that enhance their employability.

Graduates will find career opportunities in diverse areas such as medical research carried out in universities and government and industry-funded organisations, the pharmaceutical industry, government regulatory industries, industry-based biomedical companies, and diagnostic laboratories. Graduates also have further study opportunities at Flinders and interstate into other allied health degrees such as Speech Pathology and Audiology.
Also available is the Bachelor of Medical Science (Accelerated) (SATAC code 244651) which can be completed in less than the traditional 3-year time-frame, the Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) (SATAC code 244891) which is a 4-year degree that includes an honours year, or the Bachelor of Medical Science (Laboratory Medicine) (SATAC code 244581) which will also take four years to complete as it involves a full year of placement in the final year and covers areas such as haematology and transfusion science, microbiology, genetics, immunology, virology and more.

Combining degrees enables students to follow their interests and aspirations and enhance their career prospects by undertaking a second area of study in addition to their primary degree. Completing an approved combined degree option will norm ally add at least one extra year (full-time equivalent) to their studies. For example, students combining two three-year full-time equivalent degrees are normally able to complete both degrees in four years of full-time equivalent study. If the student's current English result is below the direct-entry requirement, consider the university's recognised English language pathway or ELICOS package.
