Course overview
During the course, you explore issues, concepts and practices which are common and specific to both early childhood education (including before school settings) and primary school education.
You'll learn about:
- play and learning sciences
- language and literacy
- preparation for teaching
- health and physical education
- science in education
- technology and design for education
- curriculum and programming
- maths
- leadership and advocacy in early childhood contexts
- humanities, social science and the environment
The course is designed to:
- develop professional knowledge and skills for teaching children from birth to 12 years
- prepare you for new and changing educational roles in early childhood and primary schools
- develop your skills as a reflective teacher
- explore the connection between theory and practice in early childhood and primary school education
- ensure continuing awareness of the environmental and cultural influences on teaching and learning in early childhood and primary schools
- better understand the needs of learners and communities with diverse linguistic and cultural orientations, including Indigenous learners.

Standard entry
- Recent secondary Qualify for the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE), Northern Territory Certificate of Education (NTCE) or equivalent recent year 12 qualification (including the International Baccalaureate Diploma), and achieve a competitive selection rank. Higher Ed Completed or partially completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution, or Completed a University Foundation Studies, Bridging or Enabling program Work-Life Other Completed a non-recent SACE/NTCE or equivalent secondary education qualification with a competitive selection rank, including the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB), or Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) (optional), or Personal competencies and/or employment experience (optional) If you have been employed in the Australian Defence Force you may be eligible to apply for an undergraduate course on the basis of your service. If the student's current English result is below the direct-entry requirement, consider the university's recognised English language pathway or ELICOS package. When the student successfully completes the approved pathway at the required level, the university may accept that pathway for English entry without requiring a new IELTS, TOEFL or PTE result.
