Course overview
The Diploma of Music in Jazz Performance is our intensive one-year program providing the foundational theory, aural, and performance skills needed to kickstart your career as a jazz musician. As a nested qualification within the Bachelor program, it comprises the same curriculum as the first year of the Bachelor degree. Students spend the majority of class time playing their instrument, developing technique, knowledge of harmony, and skills in improvisation and performance. With JMI's signature small class sizes and one-on-one tuition, students receive personalised attention from Australia's finest jazz educators and performers. Students learn essential jazz repertoire in both practical and theory classes, developing the ability to analyse form, structure, harmony, melody, and rhythm from different perspectives. JMI's repertoire-based curriculum offers a distinctive approach to music education where students learn through immersion in carefully selected jazz repertoire. This method develops a comprehensive understanding of musical principles that extends far beyond jazz itself. By studying how harmony, rhythms, form, improvisation and instrumental technique function within real musical contexts, students gain transferable skills applicable to virtually any musical setting.
